Ace Architects is a member of the Oakland Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce. |
| For us, design begins with the idiosyncratic circumstances of our clients, including their site, program, budget, and enthusiasms. We are especially interested in those circumstances, often the somewhat eccentric ones, which lead to the design of places intimately suited to their inhabitants and unlike all other places in the world.
Ace is neither spare nor cool; neutral nor anonymous. We far prefer John Soane’s London apartment, Hearst’s San Simeon, even Elvis’ Graceland to the latest essays in architectural Minimalism, no matter how elegant. The best places, we believe, provoke nearly palpable sensations of their inhabitants, even when unoccupied. Towards this, our projects, like our clients, are singular - often energetic, colorful, and spatially charged; literal rather than abstract; and nearly always a lot of fun. Principals Lucia Howard & David Weingarten formed Ace more than 20 years ago after graduating from U.C. Berkeley in 1977. Though the firm is best known for its retail/entertainment projects, commercial buildings such as Leviathan, and its houses, projects have run the gamut from district façade design and planning to hospitals and civic buildings, interiors, and furniture design. Ace’s retail projects are never dull. Recent stores include the Guitar Gallery and Magnetron stores at Disney World’s West Site retail district as well as several in Las Vegas. Residential projects include a group of four adjacent houses in the Oakland Hills, large additions to homes in Corte Madera and Lafayette, CA, and renovations and gardens for two San Francisco residences. TEN HOUSES, a new book on Ace Architects’ houses, was released in 2000. Ace has received a range of architectural distinctions, including awards from the AIA, Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts, and the California Preservation Foundation. Ace Architects was included in Interior Design’s “40 Under 40” in 1986, as well as Architectural Digest’s “AD 100” in 1991 and 1995. | ||
