RSVP/Questions to Andrea at 510-553-1748 x 12 Or email her at andrea@adoptaspecialkid.org "Once I was a stranger and now I know I’m me, Once I floated everywhere and now I am a tree." -Poem written by a 10-year-old adopted boy In 1973, Bob and Dorothy DeBolt established AASK Adopt A Special Kid, with one very simple principle in mind: it is every child’s right to be a permanent member of a caring and supportive family. Since its inception, AASK and its affiliated organizations have placed over 12,000 foster care children into loving homes nationwide. Despite the success of AASK, more than 37,000 children in California alone could be adopted right now, while many other children need foster families. AASK provides complete adoption services, support, education, and social events for families and their adopted children in 21 counties in Northern California. The qualified and caring staff of AASK prepares adoptive families, guides them through the adoption process, and provides them with continuous support and resources. "Adoption is million dollar smiles." –Adoptive parent Along with the adoption program, AASK collaborates with other organizations to positively impact the life opportunities of waiting children. In 1978, AASK influenced the Private Adoption Agency Reimbursement Program (PAARP), which provides a subsidy for each special needs adoption completed by licensed adoption agencies in California. Our collective effort to improve the child welfare system continues today. Over the last quarter century, AASK has planned many special events for adoptive families and the general public. In 1973, AASK launched its annual picnic, which attracts more than 200 people to this unique gathering of adoptive families. This year AASK held a free five-day camp for families in the Sierra Mountains. Events are widely attended and cherished by the families, friends and staff of AASK.
