Bay Area Community of Women (San Francisco)

BACW is committed to enriching the lives of its members and the lesbian community as a whole. That’s done in a variety of ways:

There are social events such as dances, TGIFs, singles events, sports and theater nights.

There is personal and professional development with the Networking Group.

Outstanding lesbians are recognized with the LAVA Awards.
And grants are made to deserving lesbian individuals and organizations through A Fund of Our Own.

It all began in 1980 when a group of leading Bay Area women met to discuss the need for a new organization that offered a safe, supportive environment for lesbians. Leaders were Nicole Schapiro, Rochelle Dineen, Del Martin, Phyllis Lyon, and Roberta Achtenberg. On January 14, 1983, BACW was incorporated in the State of California as a nonprofit organization.

Today there are eight regional chapters in BACW, organized by members in the local chapter areas. Each chapter is led by a chair and a steering committee that organize local philanthropic and social events in their geographic area.

Mission Statement

BACW is a 501C 3 not-for-profit organization where women who love women come to network, to socialize and to give back to the community.

Committees The best way to benefit from BACW and to meet other lesbians is to volunteer to help on a committee. Chatting with the women who help you hang the streamers for a dance often turns into new friendships.

Since we’re a volunteer organization, we rely on our members to produce and plan all our events and activities, both at the chapter level and at the Central level.

BACW Central currently has some great committees: Events, Publications, Community Relations, Professional Development, Membership, and NextGen. Chapters have their own committees, including the steering committee and other committees as needed for special events. For example, to put on a dance there might be decorations, cleanup, hospitality and catering committees, among others. We welcome volunteers to join us anywhere they have an interest. Community Service and Influence

As an organization devoted to ending discrimination and prejudice, BACW board members work tirelessly to provide positive images of lesbians. Many members take satisfaction in knowing that members like them are out there gathering in visible numbers and being counted. This is particularly important to women who are not able to come out themselves. Those members who can, take active roles in leading the organization and link with the many other community organizations providing services to lesbians and women in general.

A Fund of Our Own

The Fund supports lesbian projects and services within the local lesbian community. The Fund awards grants to individual lesbians, organizations whose focus is exclusively lesbian, and organizations that offer stand-alone programs and services that specifically benefit lesbians. Since 1989, the Fund has awarded more than $250,000 to lesbian programs and services in the areas of the arts, education, health and social services, and human rights.

The LAVA Awards:

Lesbians of Achievement, Vision and Action, The LAVA Awards, recognize lesbians who make outstanding contributions to the community. BACW sponsorship provides the means to publicly recognize these women and promote lesbian visibility. Proceeds from the annual awards benefit BACW and A Fund of Our Own.
