| Chiron Corporation is a global healthcare company with businesses
focused on cancer, infectious diseases and cardiovascular diseases. As a
pioneer in the research and development of novel healthcare products,
Chiron participated in the creation of the first genetically engineered
human vaccine. Company scientists were the first to clone the hepatitis
C virus (HCV) and contributed to the development of a blood screening
test for this leading cause of liver disease. In addition, Chiron scientists
were the first to clone, sequence and characterize the HIV genome,
enabling scientists around the world to study the structure of the virus in
order to develop more effective diagnostic tests and new therapeutics.
Chiron, which sells its products globally, employs more than 3,200 people and has facilities on four continents. In 1998, the company's total revenues were $737 million. Chiron has a global partnership with the Swiss pharmaceutical company Novartis, which owns approximately 45 percent of the company's outstanding common stock. Chiron's research team discovers and develops products using its core technology platforms in recombinant technology, gene therapy, vaccines, small molecules and genomics. Chiron has built its scientific expertise through a strong internal program complimented by a broad collaborative network. When developed, its products are either sold directly or licensed to marketing partners. Biopharmaceuticals: Chiron discovers, develops, manufactures, and markets an array of therapeutics including its flagship cancer product, Proleukin® (aldesleukin), currently approved in over 45 countries for treatment of patients with metastatic kidney cancer and/or metastatic melanoma. Blood Testing: Chiron is a leading provider of products used by the blood banking industry to ensure the safety of the word's blood supply and to protect the public health. The company's tests for hepatitis and HIV, sold through a joint business with Ortho-Clinical Diagnostic, Inc., have virtually eliminated these deadly viruses from the industrialized world's blood supply. Chiron also has a partnership with Gen-Probe Inc. to develop, manufacture and market nucleic acid testing (NAT) products. These products, which utilize proprietary Transcription-Mediated Amplification (TMA) technology, directly detect even very small amounts of HCV or HIV in donor blood. Vaccines: Chiron's vaccines market presence is strongest in Europe, where it sells a variety of novel and conventional vaccines. The company also sells pediatric and adult vaccines to multinational health organizations and local healthcare distributors around the world, for example the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). Recently, Chiron introduced RabAvert®, a rabies vaccine, into the U.S. making the vaccine available in 30 countries. Chiron is also exploring innovative technologies to develop next-generation, gene-based and protein-based vaccines to treat serious infectious diseases like HIV and hepatitis.
