| Avigen is a publicly held company with its headquarters in Alameda, California. The company is listed on NASDAQ as AVGN. Avigen is a leader in the development of gene therapy products derived from adeno-associated virus ("AAV") for the treatment of inherited and acquired diseases. Our gene therapy products are designed for in vivo administration to achieve the production of therapeutic proteins within the body. We are developing a new broad-based proprietary gene delivery technology:- AAV vectors for use in the clinic. Avigen believes AAV vectors can be used to deliver genes for Hemophilia A & B, Gaucher disease, Parkinson's diseases, beta-thalassemia, and many other diseases (see executive summary).
Avigen filed its first IND to begin human trials using its AAV-mediated gene therapy technology for hemophilia B in November 1998. After approval from the FDA in May 1999, the company began its first human clinical trial for the treatment of hemophilia B in June 1999. The trial is currently ongoing. An interim report of the data for the first two patients was presented at the American Society of Hematology meeting in New Orleans in December 1999. This data was also published in the scientific journal Nature Genetics in March 2000. | ||
