| Entering therapy to become more conscious and aware of internal experience can be a luxury that a person might feel they cannot afford when things are going well. Often it turns out that we can’t afford not to be in therapy when a symptom or difficulty feels overwhelming or is starting to affect relationships, work or functioning. It is in the nature of consciousness that some things will always lie outside of our awareness -- that sometimes we don’t want to know what is "staring us in the face." One way to think about a symptom, whether anxiety or depression or a behavior that is troubling, is that the symptom is a gesture from the body, a refusal to be turned out, sent away or dismissed, until something outside awareness is attended to. If you think I am trying to lend some character or animation to the medical term “symptom” you are right. Sometimes it does feel as those a symptom has a “mind of its own.” So I am suggesting that we can listen to the symptom rather than try to get rid of it quickly. On the other hand, I am mindful that some symptoms can be a manifestation of a chemical imbalance that may need medication and am prepared to refer to a psychiatrist if medications are indicated. My intention for my clients is to help them, at their own pace, to find greater access to, and understanding of what is trying to work its way up into consciousness through symptoms and dreams, desires and images. Becoming more mindful of the internal landscape or structure of the psyche, which includes patterns of relationship with others, is a first step toward restoring potential that may have been stifled in earlier development. When underlying structures are explored, bolstered and revisioned, creative energy can loosen up rigid behavior that may be causing suffering to a person or to their loved ones. * For more information on how I can assist you, please call me at (415) 373-0192 * Or email me 24/7 simply by clicking on the above email link * Or explore my website by clicking on the above link to it * Or fax me at (415) 373-0192 | ||
