David Franklin, MFT

While I have seen individuals and families from many diverse populations and for a large number of presenting problems, my passion is working with people who are in some sort of transition, change or period of growth.

My theoretical orientation is Eclectic, meaning I use interventions from a number of theories, but I primarily follow an Existential and Humanistic perspective. This is not only how I work as a therapist, but how I view the world as well. From this perspective, I bring the following to the therapeutic process:

1. My belief is that every human is ultimately good. We are often caught in a world containing systems which are often rigid, inhuman and create anxiety/conflicts in our lives, and I believe the "bad" things we do are ultimately a reaction or response to the systems we live under. My sense is that by finding out WHO we are, we become better-equipped to live within these systems and within society with intention and choice.
2. I greatly respect Authenticity (or "Realness") and I strive to bring this quality to my work. In chasing dreams or realities we were TOLD were important (rather than living the life we FEEL is important) people often feel empty, regardless of how "successful" they may look from the outside. By being real, I believe we are better-equipped to actualize our dreams and our passions.
3. I consider myself generally non-judgmental.
4. Ultimately as a therapist, I do not give answers to anyone's problems; I accompany someone while they find their own answers.

In addition to my Clinical Training which has included many years of supervised training and education, I bring my own life experiences to this work. My sense is that a therapist benefits from having personal experiences and living through the ups and downs which life has to offer.

My own life experiences include being a musician and songwriter with six albums to my credit, spending a year walking across the country with a group of 80 people, understanding family dynamics by being the father two children, and having experiences with cross-cultural relationships with my partner, who is from another country. I have also been a client in therapy for many years and understand this work from the client's point of view.
