Search Engine 101

This is intended to be a few thoughts on selected aspects related to Internet Search Engines ending with ideas for the 500 word Ad in your Listing. It is by no means a definitive primer on the subject.

Submit Website? Like you, I receive offers to submit websites to search engines. In my opinion, there are more important ways to gain exposure for your website via search engines. The most important search engines (especially Google) automagically go to your website once a month anyway, or now even more often, and index it so its content will appear in search results. So submitting it probably doesn't add much.

Links. There are complex ways to achieve search engine success, but one is so easy anyone can do it. It's also an important one: Asking webmasters at other websites to link to yours. Google started it, and others now follow: Many search engines now rank your website higher in search results based in part on the quality and quantity of websites that link to yours. All it takes is your time requesting other websites related to yours to link to yours, and in return you'll link to theirs. Of course, it's probably better if the topic of your website is related to the one you want a link exchange with.

Search Engine Optimization. Optimizing the text on your website is a classic way to place your website higher in search results. Jill Whalen is an SEO expert. Subscribe to her free newsletter and archives at http://www.highrankings.com/advisor.htm Her list will enable you to decide whether you want to optimize your website yourself, or hire someone to do it for you, or do nothing. Of course, what were you thinking if you have no or little text on your Home Page? Or if the text on your website is in graphics? It might be problimatic for you if the search engines can't read your website because of a lack of readable text on it.

Google AdWords Select. Internet search engines are very competitive these days, but I believe Google is one of the best. Google's AdWords Select program is very interesting https://adwords.google.com/select/  You decide how much to pay each month. You pay only when a Google searcher clicks through to your website from your ad on a Google search result (pay per click). The amount you pay depends on the keywords and key phrases you associate with your ads. The more popular key words can be expensive. Unless you have very deep pockets, or a service area with few competing for ads, you'll want to manage the keywords and key phrases in your ads so the ROI (return on investment) is worth it. Andrew Goodman wriote a terrific report to help you do this: "21 Ways to Maximize ROI on Google AdWords" http://www.page-zero.com

SMARTERyellowpages.com Key Words. In contrast to Google key words/key phrases, it doesn't cost you a cent, as in Free, to include as many highly popular key words/key phrases as are relevant to your services in the 500 word ad in your listing! So use Google AdWords to find those expensive/popular keywords/key phrases (that you can't afford in Google AdWords) and weave them into the text of your SMARTERyellowpages.com ad. You should include various forms of keywords and key phrases in your ad. For example, a firm that remodels kitchens would include cabinet, cabinets, cabinetry, counters, countertop, counter top, counter tops, kitchen, kitchens, etc. Note that the entire text of all listings, including your 500 word ad, is indexed by Internet search engines. So even if you don't have a website, Internet search engines can find you at SMARTERyellowpages.com.

We Don't Need No Stinkin' Key Words. Perhaps you don't need key words if all you're interested in is targeting your Listing to existing customers. But not everyone knows you exist. And they might not even know the which yellow page category you're listed under. So how are you going to get their attention? This is where key words/key phrases come in. If your SMARTERyellowpages.com 500 word Ad describes your service and product offerings, then a visitor will find you when their search term has key words that are also in your Ad. Once they find you then its the job of your Ad to motivate them to contact you. Simple, eh? This is what Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, etc, are fighting for. Which search engine works the hardest at getting you the results you're looking for? Don't know, but our results here: http://www.smarteryellowpages.com/stats/ - click on "Browsers" then "Spiders" show that Google is far ahead of all others in the time it spends crawling the pages at SMARTERyellowpages.com
