Does Capitalization Matter?
SmarterYP searches are not case sensitive. All letters, regardless of how you type them, will be understood as lower case. For example, searches for "physician", "Physician", or "pHySiCiAn" will all return the same results. |

Basic Search
To enter a query into SmarterYP, just type in a few descriptive words and click on the SmarterYP Search button titled "GO" to obtain your list of relevant results. SmarterYP uses sophisticated text-matching techniques to find Listings and Yellow Page Categories that are both important and relevant to your search. SmarterYP also prefers Listings or Yellow Page Categories in which your query terms are near each other. Sometimes a search is in the right area but gives too many results. To narrow the results down, you can do a new search that searches only within the results returned by the too-broad search query. This is often called "narrowing a search" or "searching within the current search results." We make this process easy. Since our search engine only returns results that contain all the words in your query, to narrow a search all you need to do is add more words to the end of your query. This gives you a new query that will return a subset of the results returned by the too-broad query. |

Automatic "and" Queries
By default, SmarterYP only returns those Listings or Yellow Page Categories that include all of your search terms. There is no need to include "AND" between terms. For example, to find an Accountant, simply type |

What is a Noise Word?
SmarterYP ignores common words and characters, known as noise words. SmarterYP automatically disregards terms such as "this", "is", "a", and so forth. |

Does SMARTERyellowpages.com Use Stemming?
SMARTERyellowpages.com does use "stemming" in searches. "Stemming" is the ability to successfully search for both the singular and plural form of a word is an example of stemming. A "word stemmer" is an algorithm that takes a word and removes common suffixes, such as plurals and "ing" endings, as well as some other english language structures such as "tional" (as in "emotional", where the root is "emotion"). |

Does SmarterYP Support Wildcards?
SmarterYP supports wildcard searches. Searching for "Physician*" will find "Physician" and "Physicians", for example. All text that starts with the characters before the * is matched. As of 12/1/02 an enhanced search algorithm changed wildcard behavior. In the above, you now need to explicitly include the double quotes in your search term. For example, "Market*" "Con*" finds "Marketing Consultants" As always, the logical "AND" is implied and need not be explicitly entered. What Are Drill-Down Searches?
In addition to full-text searches, SmarterYP searches also support "drill-down" searches. For example, to list only those Yellow Page Categories starting with a "P", for example, simply click on the P below. Then select the Yellow Page Category you want, for example, "Packaging Equipment " to display only Listings under Packaging Equipment. If you're looking for a specific Listing, select a letter from the Alphabet in the Listing display to display only those Listings whose Biz/Org name starts with the selected letter. For example, clicking on "H" displays only those Listings whose Biz/Org name begins with H. Finally, selecting a specific City displays only those Listings in that City. |

Can Searches be Restricted to a Specific City? You can further narrow SmarterYP full-text and drill-down searches by specifying a city for Listings. To restrict your results to Listings in "Oakland" for example, simply select "Oakland" below. (You can select Oakland by clicking on "Alameda" and typing an "O". Similarly for other cities.) |
